THE REAL MEANING OF EDUCATION IS BEYOND IMAGINATION

“Yippee!!!! I scored 95% marks in my 10th, 95% in my 12th and 1st division in my graduation.” When a student tell that he has scored this many marks how delightful is he and eventually we are happy to know about it. If a student tells that he has got a good job with an amazing placement offer we all say that it is because of his hard work and good education.

But what is education? Just to define it, “education is the process of acquiring knowledge or training through schools or any educational institution”. But is education is limited to the four walls of a school or does education only means to score good marks and get admission to top institutions and there also the target is to achieve good marks or is it more than that? Today most of us are educated but how many of us know the real meaning of education.

Well, what we have been taught about education is that just to learn what is taught in the school or college memorize it write it in the exam and get good marks and repeat the process. But what if a student doesn’t get good marks or he fails in the exam. In that case, he or she can’t be successful in life? Yes, they can be successful in life, because the real meaning is not to memorize but “to learn how to learn”. We sometimes hear that a graduate doesn’t get a job reason being his “mind is well filled not well-formed”. The problem with the education system is that we are taught well but we are never given an opportunity to use that knowledge. We give so much emphasis on scoring good marks that the result is if a student is unable to score well, he starts feeling depressed which leads to taking him wrong steps. According to a survey every 90 seconds a student commits suicide in India, well who is to blame for it is an individual choice.

But time has changed now those days have gone when scoring good marks were considered as the base of success and good career. Today even after poor academics anyone can be rich and successful what we have to do is just identify our interest and work on them, and after identifying the interest just learn the relevant skill. Now many companies are looking for candidates who have relevant skills irrespective of their academics. For example, if anyone is interested in finance and want to make a career in finance for him M.S Excel is a must skill. We can see that companies like Google and Microsoft don’t give value to academics if you have relevant skills you are hired irrespective of poor academics. How the area of interest is more important than academic for this we can learn from Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, no doubt they were college drop out but still they are successful reason being they have identified their area of interest.

Time has definitely changed and with that, the purpose of education has also changed but the thing is education has not changed no doubt Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates were college dropout and are successful but they have taken former education. “Even to know the meaning of successful one must be educated”. But the question is does education means good academics and scoring good marks or education is beyond that?
